The World Cup starts Friday and the host nation can hardly wait. Signs that South Africa will be holding the tournament for the first time are everywhere - and so is national pride.

Signs that South Africa will be holding the tournament for the first time are everywhere - and so is national pride.

Along with slogans such as "2010: Once in a lifetime" on the main cable sports channel, South African flags are being flown with pride. Chief local organizer Danny Jordaan says the joy is almost overwhelming.

One ingenious entrepreneur is selling covers for the side mirrors of cars - in the colors of all 32 participating nations. Judging by many of the vehicles on the country's fast-expanding road network there have been plenty of takers.
