Australia and Ukraine are level at 1-1 in their Fed Cup World Group playoff after the opening day today on clay courts at the Glen Iris Valley Recreation Club in suburban Melbourne.

Australia and Ukraine are level at 1-1 in their Fed Cup World Group playoff after the opening day on Saturday on clay courts at the Glen Iris Valley Recreation Club in suburban Melbourne.

Jarmila Groth gave Australia a 1-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ukraine's Olga Savchuk 6-1 6-1 in 48 minutes. Lesia Tsurenko, ranked 131, leveled the match with a 6-1, 6-4 upset win over 72nd-ranked Anastasia Rodionova of Australia.

The winner of the match will remain in the elite eight-nation World Group. Reverse singles and a doubles match were scheduled to be played on Sunday.
