“He will be the head coach till May,” Mitra announced. “This is a huge opportunity for me. I feel honoured and humbled,” said Chatterjee, Bencherifa’s assistant last season and a Mohun Bagan midfielder for 15 seasons. The annulment was termed amicable and, in a show of unity, Bencherifa was accompanied by Mitra and finance secretary Debasish Dutta at the press conference. “Mohun Bagan has no doubt or question whatsoever regarding the professional attitude and integrity of Mr Karim Bencherifa,” said the statement released by the club. “He could be even brought back in the future,” Mitra said.

But there was still no answer available as to why Bencherifa is going. “This isn't a resignation,” said Bencherifa. “It's an amicable agreement to part ways,” he added.
