NEW DELHI: Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez fought hard and succeeded. The 15th seeded Spanish duo got the better of defending champions Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 to make the French Open men’s doubles final on Friday. This is the news Rohan Bopanna had been hoping for. Currently ranked No 11, when the new doubles rankings list is issued on Monday, June 6, the Indian doubles specialist will return to the top 10, having dropped out in March. It’s crucial for him to be back in the top 10 considering the Rio Games. June 6 is the Olympics qualification cut-off date and players who are able to maintain a top 10 position will get to choose their partner regardless of their rank. Bopanna and Romanian partner Florin Mergea, seeded sixth, had lost to the defending champions in the quarters earlier. The Croatian Dodig, who is ranked No 9 currently with 5555 points, was defending 2000 points here. Bopanna currently has 4980 points and Dodig’s semifinal loss will automatically benefit the 34-year-old to get ahead in the ranking chart.
