The Italian says the scheduled operation on the carotid artery took place last Tuesday in Milan. That type of surgery is generally done to help reduce the risk of a stroke.

In the statement released Wednesday by the Football Association of Ireland, Trapattoni says, "contrary to media speculation, I can confirm that I have not suffered a stroke."

The 71-year-old former Italy coach says he plans to be back on Jan. 24 to announce the squad for a match against Wales on Feb 8. Trapattoni spent a week in the hospital in August after undergoing surgery following abdominal pain.
