Vijayaraman upsets third seed Sachin in first round

It was a big day for Tamil Nadu's Vasudev Vijayaraman. The 16-year-old caused the biggest upset of the day as he dug deep to defeat third seed Sachin Kumar in the first round of the boys' U-16 singles at the Fenesta Open on Monday.

It was a big day for Tamil Nadu's Vasudev Vijayaraman. The 16-year-old caused the biggest upset of the day as he dug deep to defeat third seed Sachin Kumar in the first round of the boys' U-16 singles at the Fenesta Open on Monday.

After losing the first set 4-6, Vijayaraman came back strong to pack off Chandigarh's Kumar 6-3, 6-2 at the DLTA complex. He will now take on J Pungliya, who beat qualifier Divyansh Khatri 6-3, 6-3.

Qualifier Sumit Pal Singh too caused an upset as he got rid of fifth seed Tejas Kapoor. Jammu and Kashmir's Pal Singh hardly broke into a sweat as he packed off the local boy 6-2, 6-0 to set up a date with Alex Solanki, who defeated lucky loser Mohit Bharadwaj 6-3, 6-1.

Delhi's Garvit Batra caused the third upset of the day. Junior Davis Cupper Batra fought hard to triumph over Gagan Sharma, the 10th seed, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

Paes static at number 5
Leander Paes remained unchanged at number five but Rohan Bopanna re-entered the doubles top-10 on the back his runner-up finish at the ATP Shanghai Masters. Bopanna jumped four places to number 10 after gaining 600 ranking points.
