India’s allocation of Rs 100 crore for the strategic port on the Gulf of Oman in south-eastern Iran in the budget for fiscal 2020-21 and greater clarity on the US waiver for Chabahar from sanctions imposed on Iran have heightened expectations in Tehran that work on the project will now pick up pace, said the people who declined to be named.

The budget for the external affairs ministry, unveiled on Saturday, shows the allocation for the port on the Gulf of Oman in southeastern Iran has gone up from Rs 45 crore in fiscal 2019-20 to Rs 100 crore in fiscal 2020-21.

India, Iran and Afghanistan signed the trilateral transit agreement or the Chabahar agreement in May 2016. India took over operations at the Shahid Beheshti terminal at Chabahar port in December last year through the special purpose vehicle India Ports Global.
