Metal art, a centuries-old tradition, added to UNESCO's intangible heritage list

Meet Mohamed Amine Htiouich, a 37-year-old Tunisian artisan dedicated to preserving the ancient art of metal engraving, recently honoured by UNESCO.

A Tunisian artisan engraves a design onto a copper plate at his shop in the souks of the medina of Tunis on December 7, 2023. The long-standing tradition, which has been practised across North Africa and the Middle East for centuries, was last month added to UNESCO's intangible heritage list. But while it is gaining recognition abroad, local artisans regret that metal engraving remains undervalued at home and suffers from a lack of government support. (Photo by FETHI BELAID / AFP)
