Former Punjab director general of police Sumedh Singh Saini, a 1982-batch Indian Police Service officer, who was the youngest DGP in the country, was booked along with six others on May 6 in Mohali for the alleged kidnapping of junior engineer Balwant Singh Multani in 1991. The murder charge was added later after two co-accused policemen turned approver in August.

The former DGP, Sumedh Singh Saini, whose whereabouts are not known at present, was booked in May for the alleged kidnapping of Balwant Singh Multani, a junior engineer with the Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Corporation (Citco) in 1991 and the son of a bureaucrat. Multani had been picked up by the police after a terrorist attack on Saini, the then Chandigarh senior superintendent of police.
