Australia the top dream destination: travel survey

Australia has emerged as the top dream destination in a new travel survey that reveals the most coveted cities on people’s bucket list. Maybe it’s because the island country is so far for so many of us. But according to the results of Virtuoso’s Travel Dreams Survey, if money and time were no object, travelers would choose to flock to Australia over any other country.
After the Land of Oz, respondents named Italy, New Zealand, France and Fiji as their fantasy destinations.
When asked to name their dream trip of a lifetime, the 8,830 respondents from 33 countries identified a cruise around the world, followed by a visit to the Amalfi coast.
The findings align with the growing popularity of worldwide cruising, says Virtuoso, with cabins for 2015 world cruises nearly sold out.
Paris also remains a perennial favorite city for travel dreamers, as the City of Light took the top spot in categories like Best Trips for Two; Best City for Exploring; and Gourmet Favorite.
And in the category of dream island, Hawaii managed to outrank other sun-soaked getaways like Greece and Fiji.
The survey also broke down respondents into five travel personalities: The Go-Getter;the Connoisseur; the Classic Traveler; Relaxationist; and the Trendsetter.
About a quarter of respondents -- the biggest group -- fell into the Go-Getter category, and are defined as active adventure seekers who jump at the chance to zip-line over the jungle tree tops of Costa Rica.
Traveler with a gourmet palate and luxury taste? You’re likely a Connoisseur, defined as travelers who use their vacations to indulge in interests and passions like food and wine. If you’re less a risk taker and like to stick to the tried and true, you’re more of a classic traveler, like the 20% of respondents in the poll who, once they find something they like, return to the same place or hotel every year.
If your idea of a vacation is to sit by the beach all day long, you’re a Relaxationist.
But if you’re the intrepid type who likes to take the road less traveled -- safari in Namibia, river cruising in Myanmar and wine tasting in Chile -- you belong to a category dubbed the Trendsetter, those who seek out new adventures and emerging destinations. The full results of the Travel Dreams Survey are published in the July/August issue of Virtuoso Life.
