The 'City of Joy' has snatched the top spot from the 'City of Dreams' Mumbai this year with a couple shelling out Rs 10,115 during a night out.

However, it would cost them only Rs 6,406 in Ahmedabad. Kolkata is 1.5 times more expensive than Ahmedabad, says a survey by travel portal TripAdvisor carried out in eight cities -- Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad.

TripAdvisor launched the third edition of its annual TripIndex, a travel price index of major Indian metropolitan cities.

The index aims at helping travellers determine the cost for an evening out for two people in these destinations.

TripIndex tracks the cost for two travellers for one night's accommodation, a pre-meal drink, dinner and a taxi ride in each city.

When it comes to hotels, Mumbai is the most expensive city, with room rent being as high as Rs 7,580. Pune hotels, however, offer the least rates of Rs 5,230.

But, when it comes to taxi rides, fares in Mumbai are the least at Rs 84 for return taxi fare---which means two taxi journeys of 2 km each. In Chennai, it costs Rs 230.

Dinner is the costliest in the national capital. A couple has to pay Rs 2,767 for the package, which includes two courses and a bottle of wine, while in Ahmedabad it costs just Rs 593. Beer is the cheapest in Delhi and costliest in Hyderabad.

Country manager of TripAdvisor India Nikhil Ganju says, "TripIndex is a useful reference for travellers to plan their trip budgets. It helps them estimate how far their money will take them when travelling to any of the main metro cities in the country, whether for leisure or work."

For the survey, hotel prices were the average one night rate at a four-star hotel found on TripAdvisor in each destination between June 1 and August 31.
