Romancing the myth
Kalidas’ Shakuntala to be recreated, Anil Merani tells more.
After a series of fantasy dramas it’s now time for Kalidas’ Shakuntala to hit the tube. This Sagar Arts daily premieres on February 2 on Star One. It will feature Neha Mehta, the Mamta girl, in the title role. The Sagars who are known for their mythologicals and historical sagas, insist that Shakuntala is based on a myth, it is essentially an epic love story.

Past forward
“We have extensively researched Kalidas’ writings and tried to bring the mood of the times into the show,” says Amrit Sagar. The set in Ahmedabad recreates Shakuntala’s ashram in the woods. A replica of the Himalayas has also been built. The costumes have been inspired by the paintings of Shakuntala by the celebrated artist Raja Ravi Verma.
The Sagars have also infused fairy tale elements into the show to woo the young audience. Will the epic romance click? Sagar reasons, “If Ghajini could attract family audiences despite all the violence, why not Shakuntala?”
