There was a time when a television used to be the most prized possession of a family, with religious shows being the TRP busters. Thanks to shows like Ramayan and Mahabharat, actors playing the lead roles were treated like demi-gods in real life as well. One such actor was Deepika Chikhalia who played Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s show Ramayan that ran from 1986-88.

Many TV producers tried to replicate the magic of Ramayan, but it couldn’t be recreated. However, another actor who stood out in the role of Sita was Debina Bonnerjee who played the character in Sagar Arts’ Ramayan in 2008. It was directed by Ramanand Sagar’s son, Sagar.

Recently, Debina met Deepika at an event and couldn’t stop herself from clicking and sharing a picture of them together on Instagram. She captioned the photo, “When #Sita meets Sita. How I savoured this moment of meeting you @dipikkatopiwala my first work #ramayana was on the foundation of seeing your DVDs, understanding, forming knowledge. #legend…lots of looooove.”

Deepika was a successful actor and had quite a few hits under her belt before being cast as Sita, a role that changed her life and public image forever. She kept working in films for quite some time after Ramayan got over. She is married to a Mumbai-based businessman Hemant Topiwala. She has also been an MP from Gujarat’s Baroda constituency. However, she has now returned to acting and will soon be seen in Hindi film, Gaalib.
