Sterlite protest: At least 9 killed in police firing in Tamil Nadu
At least 9 persons were killed in Tamil Nadu's Toothukudi when police fired at hundreds of people marching against a Sterlite copper smelting plant. The protesters allegedly tried to attack the collector's office amid their protest demanding the closure of the Vedanta-owned company's unit for causing health problems. The agitation, which started 100 days ago, took a violent turn after protestors apparently learned that the company planned to expand the plant. Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said, “I was grieved to know nine persons were unfortunately killed in this incident.” Tamil movie superstars and politicians Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth expressed solidarity with the protesters
