Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, standing alongside visiting Australian counterpart Richard Marles in Tokyo, said Japanese jets had scrambled against a possible airspace violation, condemned the radar illuminations as exceeding what is needed for safe flight, and lodged a strong protest with Beijing.
