US President Joe Biden has seized part of Afghanistan assets, keeping it for possible seizure by 9/11 victims. A large portion of the frozen money is proceeds of international assistance, given to Afghanistan over 2 decades. The Taliban swept to power in August as the last of the US-led coalition troops pulled out. The chaotic military withdrawal plunged Afghanistan into a humanitarian crisis.
