Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka returned safely to Earth with two other astronauts from the International Space Station on Saturday as the man who has spent more time in space than anyone else. Padalka, who has spent a total of 879 days in space over five separate trips, touched down on the barren Kazakhstan steppe on schedule along with Kazakh cosmonaut Aidyn Aimbetov and Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen. Padalka broke the record of six-time flier Sergei Krikalev, who has a career total 803 days in space. NASA and Russia are using the year-long mission to get better insight into how microgravity affects human physical and mental health and what countermeasures may mitigate any harmful effects.
