Bangladesh unrest highlights: Amid the unrest in Bangladesh following the death of youth leader Osman Hadi last week, the external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday that India condemns the recent lynching of Hindu man Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh's Mymensingh and called the hostilities against minorities in Bangladesh a “matter of grave concern”....Read More
"The unremitting hostilities against the minorities in Bangladesh including Hindus, Christians and Buddhists is a matter of grave concern. We condemn the recent killing of a Hindu youth in Bangladesh and expect that the perpetrators of the crime will be brought to justice," Jaiswal said at a weekly media briefing.
Meanwhile, Khaleda Zia's son and acting chairman of the BNP, Tarique Rahman, returned to Dhaka on Thursday after 17 years of self-imposed exile in London.
Rahman, who is being seen as a frontrunner in the parliamentary elections in the country scheduled for February 2026, marked his homecoming with a massive rally in Purbachal in Dhaka where he set the poll pitch with a message for unity. He was welcomed by huge crowds as he promised safety for the people of Bangladesh in his first homecoming speech.
"Today, I want to say that I have a plan for my country... a safe state that people have long hoped for," Rahman, 60, said in a first speech after his homecoming. “The time has come for all of us to build the country together. This country belongs to people of the hills and the plains, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians. We want to build a safe Bangladesh, where every woman, man, and child can leave home and return safely,” he was quoted as saying by Bangladesh news outlet The Daily Star.
More arrests in Hindu man's killing
Meanwhile, six more people have reportedly been arrested in connection with the killing of a Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, in Mymensingh last week. Das was reportedly thrashed, tied and set on fire and the incident strained India-Bangladesh ties as India protested against the anti-Hindu incidents in the neighbouring country.
The Dhaka Tribune reported that the arrested people have been identified as Takbir, 22, of Sunamganj; Ruhul Amin, 42, of Thakurgaon; Nur Alam, 33, of Sadar upazila; Shamim Mia, 28, of Tarakanda upazila in Mymensingh district; Selim Mia, 22, of Noakhali; and Masum Khalashi, 23, of Madaripur district. The report quoted police saying that the six arrested men had forced Das to resign from his job. According to reports, total of 18 people have been arrested in connection with Das's killing.
Indian celebs condemn Hindu man's killing
Several Indian celebrities have condemned the killing of Hindu man in Mymensingh with actor Jahnvi Kapoor terming the incident barbaric.
“What is happening in Bangladesh is barbaric. It is slaughter and it is not an isolated incident. If you don't know about his inhumane public lynching, read about it, see the videos, ask the questions. And if despite all of this you feel no rage, then it is exactly this kind of hypocrisy that will destroy us before we know it,” Janhvi wrote on her Instagram.
Actor-turned politician Jaya Prada expressed anguish over the killing and said it was an attack on the Hindu religion. “My heart is bleeding, thinking how such kind of brutality can be done to a person, in Bangladesh, an innocent Hindu person Dipu Charan Das was lynched by a mob, they not only killed him, but set himself on fire after tying to a tree, is this the new Bangladesh? It is not a normal violence, it is a mob lynching, it is an attack on Hindu religion, our temples are being demolished, the women are being attacked, how long we will be silent?,” she was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Actor Kajal Aggarwal also took to her Instagram and shared a poster with ‘All eyes on Bangladesh Hindus’ message and said, “Silence won't save you.”
Here are some highlights from latest developments in poll-bound Bangladesh that has been gripped by violence for over a week now:
- A Hindu man was killed in Rajbari over extortion allegations, The Daily Star reported. The deceased, identified as Amrit Mondal, also known as Samrat, reportedly had at least two cases filed against him with Pangsha Police Station, including a murder case. Assistant Superintendent of Police (Pangsha Circle) Debrata Sarkar said one of Samrat's associates was arrested during the incident, and had a pistol and a one-shooter gun in his possession, according to The Daily Star. The ASP further said that Samrat had two cases against him, adding that he had formed a criminal gang and had long been involved in extortion and other such activities.
- Bangladesh remains tense a week after Hadi's death, who died in a hospital in Singapore on December 18 following an assassination attempt in Dhaka. The grim situation in Bangladesh further worsened on Wednesday after miscreants hurled the bomb from a flyover in front of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad in Dhaka's Moghbazar area, according Bangladeshi media outlet The Daily Star.
- The crude bomb, hurled by unidentified men from the flyover on Wednesday, struck a person who died on the spot, Inspector (Operations) of Hatirjheel Police Station Md Mohiuddin said, according to The Daily Star.

Bangladesh unrest live updates: A court on Friday granted interim bail to 12 members of the Bangiyo Hindu Jagaran Mancha arrested for allegedly staging a violent demonstration outside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission here, an official said.
The arrested were asked to furnish bonds of ₹6,000 each with two registered sureties each of ₹3,000 as other conditions of the interim bail, he said.
"Each of the accused should meet the investigation officer thrice a week for the next four months, or till submission of the final report, whichever is earlier," the court ordered, adding that while on bail, the accused should not interfere with the probe's progress. (PTI)

Bangladesh unrest live updates: BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Friday visited the grave of his father and Bangladesh's former president Ziaur Rahman in Dhaka, 17 years after he returned home from self-exile in the UK.
The 60-year-old Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman returned to the country on Thursday after living in London since 2008.
Rahman reached Zia Udyan in a red-and-green bulletproof bus and paid floral tributes at the grave, offering 'dua' and 'munajat' for the eternal peace of his father’s soul, news portal bangla.daily-sun.com reported.
BNP founder Ziaur Rahman was a Bangladeshi military officer who served as the sixth president of Bangladesh from 1977 until his assassination in 1981. He retired from the army in 1978 with the rank of lieutenant general. (PTI)
