President Donald Trump arrived in Egypt for the global summit on Gaza's future, being attended by several world leaders. Trump arrived in the country after visiting Israel, where he addressed the Israeli Parliament.
Trump told Israel that it had no more to achieve on the battlefield and must work toward peace in the Middle East.
Trump promised to help rebuild Gaza and urged Palestinians to “turn forever from the path of terror and violence.”
Twenty hostages were released Monday as part of an agreement intended to end the war that began on Oct. 7, 2023, with an attack by Hamas-led militants. Trump may also meet some of them.
The 20 surviving Israeli hostages were handed over by Hamas to the International Committee of the Red Cross on Monday, marking a significant breakthrough in the ongoing Israel-Hamas ceasefire. Israel, in return, is expected to release more than 1,900 Palestinian prisoners.
Also among those expected to be freed are about 250 Palestinians convicted over attacks that killed or injured Israelis, along with others held on lesser charges.
Israel-Gaza hostage release: What to expect next
The next 24 hours are set to be pivotal for the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas:
1. Hamas has handed all 20 surviving Israeli hostages to Red Cross under the ceasefire deal. No immediate update was given on the condition of the released hostages.
2. As part of the Gaza peace agreement, Israel will release around 2,000 Palestinian detainees. This includes roughly 1,700 people seized from Gaza during the war, as well as about 250 others convicted for attacks that killed or injured Israelis.
3. Hundreds of aid trucks are expected to begin entering Gaza from Egypt. Around 400 trucks were already lined up on Sunday said an AP report, while Israeli authorities said the number will rise to 600 daily under the deal.
