The anti-hijab protests which began following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of Iran's controversial morality police have expanded into one of the most serious challenges to the country's theocracy since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Activists have warned that others could also be put to death in the near future, saying around a dozen people so far have received death sentences over their involvement in the demonstrations.
