Punjab-origin man jailed for drunk driving in UK
He was sentenced to 22 months for causing serious injury by dangerous driving and received a two-month concurrent sentence for drunken driving. He was also disqualified from driving for two years.
A Punjab-origin man has been jailed for 22 months in the UK for drunken driving.
Bipranjit Singh had driven his car into a group of pedestrians while over the drink drive limit in the east Midlands city of Leicester on the arterial Belgrave Road in the city on October 14 last year.
Singh, 32, pleaded guilty to the incident at the Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday. He was arrested at the scene at the time of the offence and provided a positive specimen of breath.
He was sentenced to 22 months for causing serious injury by dangerous driving and received a two-month concurrent sentence for drunken driving. He was also disqualified from driving for two years.
Singh had driven out of a side street and turned onto Belgrave Road, where he mounted the pavement, hitting a woman who was pushing a pushchair. One man suffered minor injuries, while the child in the pushchair was unharmed, but the woman suffered a broken kneecap as a result.
Detective constable Aaron Horn of the Leicestershire police said: “One of the victims in this case is still suffering as a result of the injuries that she received”.
“The custodial sentence given to Singh should serve as a stark reminder to anyone who thinks that it’s acceptable to get behind the wheel after having too much to drink.”
