Newport Beach Fire Department deputy chief Ralph Restadius told the Orange County Register that three other people were hospitalized on the Saturday afternoon crash in Orange County, one of them in critical condition.

Two cars were overturned and some people were trapped inside their vehicles.

Authorities say that the highway remained closed hours after the accident and was likely to be shut down through the night.

The highway runs up and down the California coast.
