The three were shot dead at a military sentry point near a Hindu temple on Thursday night, military spokesman Brigadier Nihal Hapuarachchi said.

The initial investigations had revealed that a soldier had gone berserk killing two colleagues before turning the gun on himself, Hapuarachchi said.

A private dispute is suspected to be the cause for the firing.

Jaffna was once a stronghold of Tamil Tigers, which fought with Sri Lankan forces for years for a separate Tamil state. The entire leadership of the group was elimintaed in 2009 by Sri Lankan forces.
