The accident occurred on a highway in Anhui province when the bus rammed into the truck as it headed toward the city of Maanshan, China Central Television said.

Footage showed a badly mangled bus as rescuers attended the injured in what appeared to be rainy weather.

No other details were immediately available.

China's roads are among the world's most dangerous, with traffic laws and safety widely flouted.

Almost 70,000 people died in road accidents in 2009 - around 190 fatalities a day - according to police statistics.
