Ban told Afghan President Hamid Karzai personally of his plans during a telephone call, the president's office said.

The conference is due to be held on July 20 as a follow up to talks in London in January that pledged international support for Karzai's plans to reintegrate moderate Taliban fighters who renounce violence.

US officials said last month that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other senior officials would take part in the July talks.
