The two leaders spoke on Wednesday about bilateral relations and exchanged opinions on the current situation on the Korean peninsula, said the People's Daily, the mouthpiece of the ruling Communist Party.
No details of the discussion were given, but the United States is pushing for tough UN sanctions on North Korea after Pyongyang tested an atom bomb on May 25, its second such test since 2006.
Regional tensions have spiked since the latest nuclear test by the regime of Kim Jong-Il, which subsequently also launched a series of short-range missiles, and renounced the 1953 truce ending the Korean war.
