Major 7.1-magnitude quake strikes Solomon Islands: USGS

A major, 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands in the western Pacific on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said, but there was no immediate tsunami alert or report of damage.

A major, 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands in the western Pacific on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said, but there was no immediate tsunami alert or report of damage.

The quake struck at a depth of about 52 kilometres (32 miles) with an epicentre 97 kilometres southwest of Kira Kira on Makira Island, the USGS said.
