Moderate earthquake shakes northern Japan

A moderate 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Japan's largest island on Saturday but there was no risk of a tsunami, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, and no immediate reports of damage.

The tremor struck at 5:03 am (0133 IST Friday), with the epicentre 161 km east-northeast of Sendai, on Honshu, the US Geological Survey said.
