A coalition statement said the person was killed on Monday. It provided no other details.

So far, 697 NATO service members have been killed in 2010, according to an Associated Press count. That makes this the deadliest of the nearly 10-year war.

The southern part of the country is a Taliban stronghold and has seen some of the worst fighting this year between the militants and foreign and Afghan troops.
