The bomber blew himself up in the Taymanee residential area near the city centre, ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary told AFP.

"There has been one person wounded. The suicide attacker was on foot and we don't know what the target was at this stage," he told AFP.

The blast was the first attack inside the capital since a January 14 assault on the five-star Kabul Serena hotel that killed at least eight people, three of them foreign nationals.

That attack was claimed by the extremist Taliban movement, which was in government between 1996 and 2001 and is now waging an insurgency.
