The vehicle exploded about 10 kilometres west of Kandahar city on a main highway that has seen several attacks linked to an insurgency by the Al-Qaeda-linked Taliban movement.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force, which has thousands of troops in the south, could not immediately confirm the reports.

An AFP reporter at the scene said one of the military vehicles in the convoy was slightly damaged. The car bomb damaged another two civilian cars and a motorbike, he said.

"Two people were killed and four wounded," said Kandahar anti-criminal police chief Rahmatullah Rahmat.
