The two Slovak men, aged 38 and 50, were stopped in a van at the border post of Ilok, in eastern Croatia, and will appear before a local court, police officer Ante Zovak told AFP.

Officers found the seven Afghans and one Pakistani, aged between 13 and 17, hidden in the van in a roof space designed for luggage.

The would-be immigrants have now been sent to a reception centre in eastern Croatia.

Croatia, which hopes to join the European Union by 2011, is one of the main transit countries for illegal immigrants trying to reach Europe.
