India-born Arun Sarin, former CEO of Vodafone Group Plc, has been awarded an honorary knighthood by the Queen of England for his services to the communications industry.
Since he is a US citizen, he cannot use the knighthood’s British-style prefix, Sir, but can add KBE (Knight of the British Empire) to his name.
Sarin headed Vodafone during its most turbulent period. He became CEO-designate of Vodafone Group Plc in April 2003, and served as its CEO from July 2003 to July 2008.
Son of an Army officer, Sarin was born on October 21, 1954 at Panchmarhi, Madhya Pradesh.
A 1975-batch IIT-Kharagpur alumnus, Sarin led Vodafone’s entry into the Indian market with the acquisition of Hutchison Essar in 2007.
