Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced on Monday evening the results of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination to shortlist nearly 15,008 of the 4 lakh-odd aspirants on the basis of their score in a 200 marks general studies paper.

The central government had directed UPSC to treat the second paper, frequently referred to as the civil services aptitude test (CSAT), as a qualifying paper and not count marks scored by aspirants in this paper to draw up the shortlist.

Candidates, however, had to score a minimum of 33% -- 66 out of 200 marks – to clear the first of the three-stage examination. UPSC had later also set up an expert panel to review the changes needed in the examination again.

Successful candidates can now appear for the essay-based main examination that will be again used to shortlist candidates for the personality test in March-April next year.

Over 9.4 lakh civil service aspirants had applied for the preliminary examination earlier this year. Only half of them appeared for the first stage of the examination process used to recruit officers for over two dozen civil services. including the IAS and IPS.

UPSC also declared that it had also shortlisted another 1,415 candidates for the Indian Forest Service on the basis of the preliminary examination.
