Pop star Justin Bieber recently deleted his Instagram account after a virtual spat with his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez. However, the 22-year-old isn’t alone. Several celebrities have chosen to stay away from social media over issues such as racial abuse and body shaming, among others. Here, we round up a few.
Adele quit social media in 2012 after she was body shamed for her post-delivery weight. The singer’s account was reactivated a month later, but, apparently, it is now mostly controlled by her team.
2 Zayn Malik
Zayn Malik quit Twitter in 2012 when he was accused of cheating on his then-girlfriend Perrie Edwards. He signed off with a tweet that read, “I’m sick of all the useless opinions and hate that I get daily goodbye twitter :).” His absence was, however, short-lived. He returned just two days later. In August 2015, Malik deleted his Instagram account, only to return the next day.
Rihanna quit Instagram in May 2014, as the platform has stringent policies on nudity. The pop star loved posting topless pictures of herself, something that did not go down well with the photo-sharing site. She, however, returned to the site after six months.
4 Miley Cyrus
In 2009, Miley Cyrus quit Twitter because her beau Liam Hemsworth wanted her to. After three years, in 2012, she returned citing actor Charlie Sheen as the reason behind it. “I’m not gonna lie. I came back to twitter for 2 reasons. My fans and to follow @charliesheen #winning (sic)” read her tweet.
5 Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato joined Twitter after quitting it for less than a day in July. One of her comeback tweets read, “I love my Lovatics too much to leave them over some lame ass haters.. What was I thinking?! (sic)”
6 Nicki Minaj
In November 2012, Nicki Minaj took a fight with one of her fansites to a new level by deactivating her social media accounts. The fansite had leaked her new song. After a nine-day break, the singer returned to the platforms.
7 Normani Kordei
The singer, who is part of the five-piece outfit Fifth Harmony, deleted her Twitter account earlier this month after some racist comments were directed at her. She bid goodbye to her fans by posting a long note on the micro-blogging site.
8 Leslie Jones
Trolls on Twitter tirelessly directed racial abuses at The Ghostbusters actor and that resulted in her quitting the platform in July. However, she returned after two days, and posted, “Welp...a b***h thought she could stay away. But who else is gonna live tweet Game of Thrones (sic)!!”
