War for the Planet of the Apes, the third in the Planet of the Apes reboot series, is attracting widespread praise. Quartz ran a piece speculating it “might be the greatest ending of a film trilogy ever”. A big reason for the series’ success is the state-of-the-art visual effects used to create lifelike apes, and a new featurette highlights the process of transforming human actors into primates.

The one-minute video, which consists of just one, long shot of Andy Serkis delivering a speech about war, transitions from being actual footage of the actor, wearing a motion capture suit, to the final shot; a breathtakingly detailed ape.

“It is my hope that out of this solemn occasion, a better world will emerge, out of the blood and carnage of the past,” he says, as the tagline, “Not all heroes are human,” flashes on the screen.

War for the Planet of the Apes is directed by Matt Reeves, who also helmed the series’ previous entry, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. He will now direct Ben Affleck in the solo Batman movie. WFTPOTA is scheduled for a June 14 release.
