The demand for a discussion on deteriorating law and order situation including attacks on Hindi speakers earned suspension for five BJP legislators from the five-day winter session of the Assam assembly that began on Monday.

Eight of nine Congress MLAs who had earlier aligned with the BJP were also suspended by speaker Pranab Gogoi for raising a similar demand that led to pandemonium in the 126-member house.

The BJP has six MLAs excluding two who switched over from the regional Asom Gana Parishad.
