A schoolgirl from Haluwas village in Bhiwani district reportedly committed suicide on Thursday midnight after a 45-minute audio clip containing references to her went viral. The girl was a class 12 student.

The audio clip, which surfaced three days ago, contains a purported conversation between another schoolgirl and Hari Om, a school teacher.

In the conversation, the schoolgirl is heard telling Om that a boy had written his phone number on her hand. However, the teacher replies that the number was not meant for her, but her schoolmate (who later committed suicide).

Though the references were innocuous, the audio raised a veritable storm in the village. “The conversation is more than one year old, but surfaced only three days ago. When the audio clip went viral, the village panchayat asked the government school to take action against the four teachers named in the audio,” a source told HT. Following this, the education department transferred them on Wednesday evening.

The name of the deceased girl crops up twice in the audio clip.

School headmaster Ram Dhari said the conversation occurred after the two girls had already passed out of the village school, and joined another institution for higher studies.

The body of the schoolgirl was sent for a post-mortem examination. Assistant sub-inspector Sukhbir Singh, who is investigating the case, refused to comment.
