A 28-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped in an Andheri (West) slum on Monday. The police have arrested eight people for the crime.
The Amboli police said the incident took place in a shanty between 10.30pm and 11pm in Shyam Nagar slum in Andheri (West). The secluded shanty is on a hilltop at one end of the slum, the police said.
The police said the woman and her husband — they live in Powai — had gone to the Andheri slum to meet a friend, a woman who works as a help in a private hospital. The couple intended to rent a shanty in the slum, the police said. As it was late, the woman allegedly asked the couple to stay over. “The husband and wife fought over an unknown reason,” said a police source.
“Hearing the noise, the eight accused, all locals, entered the shanty. Three of them took the husband out of the room, and the remaining five took turns to rape his wife for an hour,” said the police source. The woman approached the police.
The police said the survivor is stable and has undergone a medical test at a government hospital. The police registered an FIR and picked up seven of the accused. The eight accused was arrested soon after. All accused are drug addicts, and at least one of them has a prior record, a police officer said. Seven of them were produced before a magistrate’s court and remanded in police custody until October 4. The eighth accused will be produced before a magistrate’s court on Wednesday.
