Four years after his fiancée Sheena Bora was murdered, Rahul Mukerjea — Peter’s son from his first marriage — took to Twitter to share photographs of her, saying ‘Missing you this Diwali’.
Rahul and Sheena started dating when she was in her second year, pursuing a degree in economics from St Xavier’s College in Mumbai. Rahul — who aspired to become a model and an actor — had moved to Mumbai from Berkhamstead, United Kingdom (UK), with his father, Peter Mukerjea’s consent in 2008. Sheena was introduced to him as Indrani’s sister.
In December 2008, Rahul visited Marlow building — the Mukerjea’s Worli home — where Sheena was also present. Weeping, she complained about Indrani’s behaviour and attitude towards her. Uncomfortable at being known as Indrani’s sister, Sheena had fought with her mother. Rahul — who by then had developed a level of comfort with Sheena — offered to let her stay with him. Sheena agreed. Rahul and Sheena started living together, which angered Indrani.
Indrani, along with Peter and one of her friends, had separated Sheena and Rahul. That did not stop them from dating, and they eventually got engaged. Rahul and Sheena’s engagement further irked Indrani, who started planning Sheena’s murder.
After Sheena went missing on April 24, 2012, Rahul had tried to find her. He visited Marlow building, where the Mukerjeas stayed. He tried to register a missing person’s complaint at three police stations. At the same time, he tried to find out where Sheena was by talking to Peter and Indrani. Rahul, who had found Sheena’s disappearance suspicious, made it a point to record all his conversations with Indrani and Peter on his Blackberry phone. This later became crucial to the investigation when he submitted it as evidence, first before the Khar police, and later to the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI).
