Hundreds of activists of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday held a protest against the nomination of former superintendent of police and Arjuna awardee Sajjan Singh Cheema to contest the ensuing assembly polls from the Sultanpur Lodhi constituency and urged the high command to cancel his nomination. The protesters also burnt his effigy.
All circle and booth in-charges of the AAP from the constituency joined the protest and carried black flags to express their resentment.
Meanwhile, Cheema also organised his first road show after the party announced his candidature from Sultanpur Lodhi. A majority of local party volunteers have been opposing his nomination after the announcement was made by the party recently.
Party members had also submitted an affidavit to AAP state convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur, leveling allegations of corruption against Cheema and demanding cancellation of the ticket to him.
Kulwant Singh, a party activist from Talwandi Chaudhrian, said that around 200 –people participated in Cheem’s road show, but most of them were from Jalandhar or Taran Taran while no local senior party leader participated in his rally. “We have told the AAP leaders that Cheema is a corrupt person and had property worth crores, earned through his illegal businesses. He had also encroached 20 acres of land in Damuhiya village,” he said. Volunteers clarified that their protest was not against the party but it is only against Cheema.
“There are so many dedicated volunteers, who have been working for the past two years to strengthen the party. Cheema does not deserve to be given the ticket to contest the polls,” they said. They threatened to boycott the elections in case Cheema is allowed to contest polls on the party ticket from Sultanpur Lodhi.
Meanwhile, wrestler Dalip Singh Rana, known as ‘Great Khali’, inaugurated the office of Aam Aadmi Party candidate Sajjan Singh Cheema in Sultanpur Lodhi and extended unconditional support to him ahead of the assembly polls. He, however, ruled out any plans to join the AAP.
