Car crash mystery: Sedan lands on top floor of building in California town

Authorities in Santa Ana say that the speeding car hit a concrete median and went airborne, before crashing into the building.

This bizarre visual of a car dangling off the second storey of a building in California has spawned many a joke, but how exactly did the vehicle wind up here?

Police in Santa Ana, California, said that the speeding Nissan sedan crashed into a concrete median just outside the building, which is a dental office. After the collision, the sedan flew about 60 feet into the air before ramming into the second storey of the building.

Officials of Santa Ana police department received a call about a crash at about 5:30 a.m. The car was travelling at a very high speed, and it went airborne after hitting the concrete divider. The car also appeared to be coming from the wrong side.

The flying sedan slammed into the building, which caused a small fire at the point of contact. The fire was extinguished by the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA).

There were two people in the car. One person managed to get out unassisted, while the other had to be extricated by authorities after an hour.Both were taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

The fire department used a specialised forklift and wrecker to remove the car, after they had stabilized the vehicle.

The identity of the two people in the car is unknown. According to the New York Times, the driver told officers he had used drugs before the crash. A police spokesman said authorities had filed a charge of driving under the influence.
