If you are curious about the rich cultural heritage of the north eastern states, here’s your chance to know it all. An ongoing design festival- The North East Design Fest- is exhibiting the history of traditional textiles and handicrafts from the seven sister states and beyond.
“The festival aims to bridge the gap between North-East and the mainstream. It provides a platform for designers, performing artists, craftsmen and weavers from different parts of the region,” says Vikram Rai Medhi, the organiser of the event.
The four-day gala, which began on September 19, has been organised by the North East Institute of Fashion Technology (NEIFT), in association with the ministries of textiles, home affairs, handicrafts, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME), government of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Some of the participating designers include Meghna Rai Medhi, Boney Darang, Rinzing Choden Bhutia, Charlee Lalthlenmawia and Melody Runremsangi. Red Light Passengers (RLP), a rock band from Nagaland, will perform today. Manipuri rock band, Towering Faith, has an act slated for the last day of the fest. “With our performance, we hope to inspire people and tell them what north eastern music is all about,” says Kachingmi Zingkhai, vocalist and guitarist, Towering Faith.
