A 15-year-old gang rape victim succumbed to burn injuries on Thursday morning at Bundelkhand Medical College, Sagar.
The girl was allegedly raped by two people including a minor on December 7 at her residence in a village near Bina town. When the girl cried for help, the accused allegedly set her afire after pouring kerosene oil on her.
Neighbours doused off the fire and admitted her to the hospital.
The girl had received 90% burn injuries and died after six days at the government hospital.
The news of the death created tension in the village. The villagers refused to cremate the body until the compensation being provided to the victim’s family. Congressmen also joined the protest and demanded a compensation of Rs 25 lakh.
A heavy police force has been deployed in the village.
Sagar, superintendent of police, Satendra Kumar Shukla said Raghvendra, a local villager and a minor boy had been arrested on the basis of dying declaration given by the victim in the hospital.
However, the victim’s family alleged that the another accused was not a minor.
“The incidents of harassment is quite common in our village due to the illegal sale of liquor by the father of a minor accused. The accused is not a minor. The accused’s father presented forged documents to the police,” said the uncle of the victim.
The villagers also alleged that illegal sale of liquor had led to anti-social activities in the area and despite repeated complaints to the police, no action was taken.
“We are investigating the matter and also looking into the allegations that the documents on one of the accused are forged ones. We will also get a medical examination of the minor accused done to ascertain his real age,” said SP Satendra Shukla.
Shukla also suspended Bhangarh police station, the nearest police station to the village, in charge officer and certain police personnel. A departmental inquiry has also initiated against them.
The home minister Bhupendra Singh had announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the victim.
