Construction work of the most awaited virology laboratory stopped before it could start. It was supposed to be constructed on the premises of Gandhi Medical College (GMC).
President of Muslim Teohar Committee, Hifz-ul-Rehman, filed public interest litigation (PIL) with court claiming the 18 acre land of GMC on which the lab was going to be constructed, belonged to a graveyard.
The construction was supposed to start from this month for which all the preparations were completed but before it could start, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation ( BMC) served a notice to GMC to stop the construction.
The foundation stone ceremony The virology lab was an important project for the state government as the lab would provide facility of various important tests. The lab will also provide facility of H1N1 flu (swine flu) test.
This lab is of the virology lab was scheduled for this month and ministers and senior officials of the medical education department were supposed to attend the ceremony but before that, BMC instructed college administration to stop the construction work.
A meeting for resolving this issue was organised at collector office few weeks ago. However, no concrete decision was taken in the meeting regarding it.
Relevant for the state as new viruses are coming in existence leading to severe viral disorders. With the establishment of this lab, various tests would be conducted with latest technology.
According to the GMC administration, the PIL filed by the person was not against GMC but against state government.
The land was donated to the college by Nawab Hamidullah. The documents of Nawab donating the land were present in record but documents of land registered on the name of GMC were not present, the administration officials of GMC informed.
The construction work of the laboratory was going to start from this month.
The construction as well as establishment of laboratory would take atleast two years if it would start from this month. But after this PIL, the chances of starting the construction work of the hospital are very less.
In all, Rs 22 crore has been sanctioned for the construction work of virology lab. An agency of public works department was going to do the civil work of the laboratory. Entire map of the virology lab was also prepared.
When contacted Rehman, he said the land was donated to the medical college by Nawab Hamidullah Khan but there was actually a graveyard in 18 acre land of the medical college. He said he would not provide the land to the medical college at any cost.
