The Jabalpur Municipal Corporation plans to install 50 such dustbins in the town’s 700 acres land that is being developed under the centrally sponsored smart city project.
An official said 40 of such bins will have 1.80 tonne capacity each while the rest will have 1 tonne capacity. In addition, 200 such smaller bins fitted with sensors will be introduced in narrow lanes.
A smart dustbin is fitted with a sensor that automatically informs a person responsible to remove garbage as soon as 80% of it gets filled, the official said.
Mayor Swati Godbole told HT on Tuesday that a private firm would look after removal of garbage from the smart dustbins as well their maintenance.
The corporation has already planned to install GPS in trucks transporting garbage to track them. Notably, door-to-door garbage collection is operational in 58 out of the 79 municipal wards.
A plant is also being set up at Kathonda under the public-private partnership for disposal of garbage.
