HC directs Centre to furnish report on BMHRC
Madhya Pradesh high court has directed the Centre to furnish a time bound programme for appointment of super specialist staff and to improve the condition of the Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC), within four weeks.

The BMHRC, which began operations in 2000 and is run by the Centre’s department of health research, is a 350 bedded multi-speciality tertiary care centre established for providing treatment to the Bhopal gas tragedy-affected persons.
The high court’s direction came after the Centre pleaded for some more time to furnish details about the implementation of recruitment rules for BMHRC doctors and other staff.
On September 7, the HC asked the Centre to file the status of the recruitment rules after the petitioner said that over 12 doctors working in the BMHRC tendered their resignation in August 2016. The doctors were concerned about future instability in the absence of any service conditions or rules.
ND Jayaprakash, a convenor of Bhopal Gas Peedith Sangarsh Sahyog Samiti said despite the court’s order, the Centre did not file the status of the recruitment rules and whether any steps were taken to engage specialist doctors on contractual basis on deputation.
He said that due to Centre, the hospital has not been able to function or give necessary medical and health services to the gas victims.
In February 2016 the draft of recruitment rule, prepared by the Union department of health research, was forwarded to the department of personnel and training for approval and it is pending, the petitioner said.
At present, 3.76 lakh gas victims are registered with the OPD of the BMHRC out of which 1.5 lakh gas victims take medical treatment at the hospital.
The court issued the directive during hearing on a joint petition filed by the Bhopal Gas Peedith Mahila Udyog Sanghthan, the Bhopal Gas Peedith Sangarsh Sahyog Samiti and the Bhopal Group for Information and Action
