Seven children, aged 12 to 14 years, drowned on Sunday allegedly while bathing in a water-filled ditch near a stone-crushing site in Guna district’s Piproda Khurd village.
A magisterial probe has been instituted and the district administration has announced Rs 1 lakh compensation to the kin of each of the deceased.
According to sources, the children were collecting money for Navratri celebrations in the village. At around 4.30 pm, when they were returning home, they stopped at the ditch to take a bath and drowned.
The children were identified as:
■ Tillu Kushwaha, 14
■ Hemant Kori, 12
■ Dilip Jagannath, 12
■ Vikas Kori, 13
■ Karan Kushwaha, 12
■ Golu Kori, 12
■ Anand Kushwaha, 14
Villagers saw a body floating in the ditch, following which the police was informed. The bodies were fished out and taken to the district hospital in Guna by the villagers, reportedly in a tractor trolley.
The police have registered the matter under Section 174 of the CrPC.
“So far, no case has been registered against anyone as investigations are on to find who dug the ditch. The ditch was about 7-8 feet deep and the deceased children couldn’t sense its depth which resulted in the incident,” said superintendent of police PS Visht.
In another incident, a 13-year-old boy drowned in a lake in Bhopal’s Gunga locality on Saturday while bathing.
According to Gunga police, the deceased had gone with his mother to a lake in the locality. His mother was washing clothes at the shore when the boy entered the water. Seeing him struggling to stay afloat, the mother called for help. The boy was pulled out of the water and rushed to a nearby hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead.
Police is investigating the incident.
