Amid charges and counter-charges between Congress and BJP over PEB scam, a group of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) functionaries along with students and parents, are demanding greater transparency in organising competitive examinations for admission into prestigious courses and recruitment in various government jobs.
They staged a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and also held a rally in Bhopal on Monday. They are also demanding that accountability be fixed for the scam.
RSS has been ambivalent in its stand on the scam and demand for a CBI probe into the scam. Names of some top RSS functionaries have figured in the Special Task Force (STF) charge sheets but none of them have been questioned or charge sheeted. At the same time, a powerful local lobby in the RSS has been working to exert pressure on the state government to ‘expose the whole truth of PEB scam’.
A prominent RSS member from Gwalior Manish Kale, who worked as pracharak till 2005 and Abhay Jain, former RSS regional intellectual cell’s chief, have formed a committee — Vyapam Ghotala Sangharsh Samiti — to carry out agitation for ‘fixing accountability for the scam’.
It’s also strange that the whistleblower in the PMT scam from Gwalior Ashish Chaturvedi, who has been accusing chief minister of being directly involved in the PEB scam, puts up at RSS headquarters Samidha, whenever he visits Bhopal in connection with legal proceedings in the scam.
“I am not an RSS volunteer. But, they had themselves invited me to Bhopal when they came to know about my work in exposing the PMT scam. They are also of the opinion that PEB scam should be wholly exposed,” said Ashish when he recently came to Bhopal to depose before SIT.
Talking to HT over phone, Manish Kale, a volunteer, said, “Thousands of students have been affected due to the scam, therefore accountability for scam should be fixed...”
When HT asked whether it was their own initiative or RSS backing for the protest, Kale said, “We haven’t talked to any RSS leader. We work for RSS as its volunteer. We believe in its ideology and we learnt in the shakhas that it is the duty of every citizen to raise his/her voice against corruption.”
When HT called RSS, MP prachar pramukh Narendra Jain, he didn’t give any comment and said he was not aware of any development.
