A projected portion of a bridge used by pedestrians collapsed late last night, killing a couple near Bharat Talkies area in Bhopal, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on late Monday night, said the police.
“The victims were identified as Parvati, 55, and her husband, Hanuman, 60“, said T Sapre, Town Inspector (TI), Bazaria police station.
“We have learnt that the couple hailed from Chhindwara district, but were living in Bhopal for quite sometime”, he said.
Police said that the victims were labourers. They were sleeping under the bridge at night, when the slab fell on them.
“The projected portion of the bridge collapsed, which caused the deaths. They died on the spot”, said a police official. The bridge was built by the Public Works Department (PWD) nearly 40 years ago.
The police reached the spot soon after the mishap. The bridge passes over the Delhi-Mumbai railway line. The PWD is supposed to look after the maintenance of the bridge.
